Correct me if I’m wrong here, but:

Sony’s newest product disaster-in-the-making is a $350 device that lets me send IM’s, “surf the web,” and listen to music…so long as I’m in wifi range.
SooooooOOOooooooooo……..in addition to carrying around my phone, which I already own, and it already lets me send IMs, listen to music, and “surf the web” so long as I’m anywhere with cell reception, I can pay THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS to carry the “Mylo” around too?

Oh but wait, if it “plays music” that means there’s yet another set of DRM rules I can aquaint myself with if I want “my music” on this particular device. I guess the advantage to carrying around this brick is the features my cell already has…but bigger, heavier, unable to fit in a pocket, and with a QWERTY kb.

Right. Let me sign up to buy one of these RIGHT NOW.

Ah yes i see your point (and a good one at that). However, I did not say that the Mylo was going to be a huge seller. It is merely a step in the right direction, especially considering Sony has made some bad, bad choices lately (regarding the PS3). Personally I would never buy one of these (am perfectly fine with my iPod and cell phone). I will admit it is high priced, but if you’re looking for a video player that also lets you IM, and play music, then it is quite a good price (if you don’t want to fork over the $600 for a decent DVD player).

Sony has not released an official statement as to when the Mylo will launch, but it is supposed to be around early to mid September. It will most likely be early September as Sony aims to attract back-to-school buyers. I will update you as soon as i have any further info. Cheers,

To me this product is an Ipod Video with more features. I mean look at the Ipod video, its quite similar to Mylo’s offerings. Both have 320×240 resolution, both have practically the same screen size 2.4″(mylo) 2.5″(ipod), both can play music and videos, the Sony Mylo isn’t much larger than the Video Ipod if you check the measurements, its definitely pocketable, unlike the psp. Now thats where the similarities end. And people are definitely willing to pay $300 dollars for a video ipod, so why not Sony Mylo, for just 50 bucks more?

Video Ipod does have more space by far than Sony Mylo but thats about all it has on Mylo. The Sony Mylo has IM apps, VOIP and web browsing that isn’t on the video Ipod. Personally I got sick of relying so much on Telcos in general b/c of their expensive prices, thats why I switched to Skype, which only charges me 3-4 dollars per month for unlimited calling. VOIP does have its limitations, requiring a hotspot, but sacrificing some mobility for a steep price drop in monthly cellphone bills is well worth the sacrifice, when you compare it to what we normally pay for cellphones monthly, 40-80 dollars per month.

Another big difference I see between the Video Ipod and the Sony Mylo is battery performance. The Video Ipod last no longer than 2-3 hours max playing videos, as opposed to 8 hours playback on Sony Mylo, what good is mobile technology if it keeps running out of batteries? I don’t know how many hours of music playback Video Ipod gets, but 45 hours on the Sony Mylo sounds impressive, its nice to know if you forget to charge your Mylo you will still be ok with plenty of battery juice left.

Theres plenty more that makes the Sony Mylo that much better than the Video Ipod, but the point is they are about the same price but one has way more features, but no one is complaining about Video Ipod are they. When justifying prices of products always look around at what the competition is offering to see if it is reasonable, if there is a product that does offer similar features but at a much lower price then I’d start bitching, but for now I don’t really see any competition for Sony Mylo that seriously makes it look over priced.

The release date for the Sony Mylo is September 2006. I agree the cost is a tad pricey, but with wireless WAN popping up everywhere worldwide, who knows – cheaper phone calls/IM. Rather than having the old MyLife Online monthly fee.

I think the attraction of this is the wifi capabilities. You get true web access not sports scores an AOL IM..You get this free. You don’t need to pay 40 per month or some data plan. Not many devices have wi-fi. It could also eliminate your cell phone if you use the skype phone capability. I’m a buyer..

i think its a great idea! This is exactly wat i’m looking for (almost). I’m one of those people that cant justify a reason for getting a celly. Yeah i’m that oldschool. but at the same time i love to surf the internet and listen 2 music, and talk to friends using IM. Couple things i dont like is the HIGH price! They also have a lack of im choices, i mean alot more people use MSN and AIM than Yahoo messenger so why bother to use Yahoo i had to go and make a yahoo email just so i can prepare to use this device? Another thing is if they want me to use this device all the time why make the screen so small (2.4″). After a few weeks i know i’m gonna go even more cross eyed. They should have made the memory more but i guess i can just attach a flash drive when i need it or a memory stick. Over all its a good looking device i like the design, ever since i found out about it i knew i was gonna get it. There’s only one question i got left. Should i get it in black or white?

Well, you can always go to http://www.meebo.com and sign on to aim from there, considering the fact that you CAN web browse. this is like the perfect device. find an arm band strap or waist clip or something like that, and you can take it to cross coutry or track workouts. trust me about this, once you start using it, you won’t complain about screen size (unless ofcourse you have a psp) but it is a well worth sacrifice. I don’t know that much about skype (except that a lot of ppl have it especially in other parts of the world) but hopefully, either with monthly fees or something like that you will be able to call other cell phones. if you think about it, there will be a “hotspot” anywhere you go. in every block there is at least one unsecured network that you can use. and like it already comes with 1GB! give me a break, you aren’t going to need ALL of your music on the go. 1GB is perfectly fine for a start. just buy a whole bunch of mem sticks and put parts of your music collection on there. and yes pricing is a big problem. i’ll just convince my parents to buy it for me. plus if i can figure out how to call phones, (its i think about 4 bucks a month) i can just tell them to stop servicing my cell phone, and then they will save money. the bottom line: if you can get your hands on it, it is well worth the buy. one more thing, cell phones with these capabilities aren’t free like the mylo (i used the word) you pay a shit load, plus the phones don’t have much internal memory. so just get your hands on that money.

I have owned the SONY Mylo since Sept. 18, 2006. So far, my wife and I have loved it. The device has pleasing appeal, well built “Made in Japan.” The screen is so bright and clear. The video and music are excellent. Wifi connection is very good. Skype is better than I expected. Here’s the advantage that this device has over IPOD that not many people have not mentioned — built in speaker sounds great!!

Through my observation, most of the negative opions seemed to come from people who have not yet owned, nor tested it. Can you find a comparable small device with built-in keyboard “Made in Japan” that can do skype, Yahoo IM and Google Talk, play video, music with built-in speaker with 9 hours of battery life, browse the web using Opera browser, create document and allow portable storage through MS Pro Duo?

By the way, I have a PDA phone with all these features and more, but can’t deliver the tasks half well.

Sharp Clamshell Zaurus does video four times as well (640×480). Nokia 770 or 800 more than that.

A bluetooth or usb option for keyboard or modem would have massively improved this Mylo thing’s range of uses (=value).

Sony chooses Linux and then proceeds to lock the software down so tight that nobody can customize or add any software.

What is wrong with this picture? Do we blame it on the arrogance of who used ot make great designs? Should we make up a conspiracy theory?
